Tongariro Crossing, Tongariro National Park, New Zealand

my first trek in NZ
we started the trek with a sunny day. one hour into the trail I fell and bruised my knees. and my arms. and my collar bones. being a volcanic area, the ground was cover with basalt stones, so I guess you can imagine my pain. I decided to continue walking, despite the pain. and the blood. soon enough I found myself alone because I was walking to slow…when I got to the top I could finnaly breath…the air was clear and nice, and there were still some people on top, taking photos. those clouds came closer and closer, and about five minutes after I took this photo I couldn’t see farther than one meter away. the clear nice air became grey and humid. but it disappeared as fast as it appeared. and I found myself alone again. no one in front of me and no one behind me. alone, completely, in this awesome nature. my emotions were mixed – scared, awed, overwhelmed, happy. free. the two last hours of the trek were in the bush, while it was heavy raining. New Zealand is known for it’s four-seasons-in-one-day climate. soaking wet, I arrived back to hostel 3 hours after everyone else. even the old people were faster than me. everyone were cheering me and asking me if I needed anything…a cup of tea, a bowl of rice…super nice. the shower was awesome. I have come to realise that the first shower after a trek is a sacred ritual. for me, anyway. after this trek I have done 5 more. each one of them was special in a different way, and each one of them gave me different scars. yes, I’m clumsy. I could write a book about all the bad stuff that happen to me. but i prefer to remember the good stuff and laugh about the bad 🙂
